From sketches to print

Sketching the idea

To sketch an idea for a skateboard graphic, I begin by considering the theme or vibe I want to express—whether it’s bold, vintage, abstract, or nature-inspired. I focus on keeping it simple, ensuring the graphic reflects the board’s style while remaining bold and eye-catching. Once the sketch is finalized, I refine it with clean, smooth lines using a thin mechanical pencil, adjusting the line thickness to add depth and emphasis.

Inking and Colors

The process from inking to coloring begins by adjusting the stroke weight and smoothing out any rough edges to achieve crisp, professional lines. Once the inking is complete, lock the sketch layer to prevent accidental edits. Next, create a new layer beneath the ink layer for each color group (such as the background, clothing, or characters). Use the Pen Tool or Live Paint Bucket to fill in areas with base colors, ensuring each color stays within the outlines. Create additional layers to apply gradients or use the Brush Tool with low opacity for subtle shading.

Print

Once the artwork is finished, the colors are carefully checked and prepared for printing. Pantone colors are verified, and any flaws are fixed to make sure the designs look good and meet the required standards before being sent out for distribution or sale.
